The Campaign to END the Death Penalty CCTX's Blurbs
About me:
The Campaign to END the Death Penalty is a group dedicated to the complete abolishment of the death penalty.

We, as a group, oppose the death penalty for five basic reasons:

1. The Death Penalty is Racist.
2. The Death Penalty Punishes the Poor
. 3. The Death Penalty Condemns the Innocent.
4. The Death Penalty Does Not Deter Violent Crime.
5. The Death Penalty Is Cruel and Unusual.

There are several other reasons to oppose the death penalty, but these are the five that CEDP works with.

Aside from these, many of the members of the Corpus Christi chapter oppose the death penalty on the grounds that the state should not have the right/power to condemn someone to death. There are too many problems within the system to allow for a "Clean Chance" at justice. Being how it is almost impossible to get rid of the faults within the current system, the death penalty should be abolished.

An updated version of the pamphlet we use that elaborates on the five reasons listed above can be found in the blog section.

PROTEST THE FIRST TEXECUTION IN 8 MONTHS:
STOP THE EXECUTION OF DERRICK SONNIER!

Tuesday, June 3 at 5:30 PM
Texas State Capitol,
Street Steps at 11th and Congress.

Between September 2007 and May 2008 there were no execution in the United States, while the Supreme Court deliberated over the current method of lethal injection. In the end the court decided that the use of lethal injection is not cruel and unusual punishment. As abolitionist we say all executions are cruel and unusual. It's time to end the barbaric death penalty. Let's tell Texas there's…

NO RIGHT WAY TO
DO THE WRONG THING!

Death Penalty Awareness Week
February 25-29, 2008

This is an annual event with participation from CEDP chapters across the US. The Austin CEDP will be organizing a week of activities including:

A People’s Tribunal Against the Death Penalty
Tuesday, February 26 at 12 PM
UT Campus, West Mall Steps
We will present strong evidence against the continued use of the death penalty. Our verdict: the death penalty is dead wrong!

Is the Death Penalty on the Way Out?
A CEDP Presentation
Wednesday, February 27 at 7 PM
At UT, NOA Room 1.116.
From the Supreme Court moratorium due to a case about lethal injection, high profile cases like that of Kenneth Foster, Jr. in Texas, to abolition of the death penalty in New Jersey, support for the death penalty continues to slowly decline. Join the CEDP for a presentation that will describe these recent developments, as well as look at the CEDP's role in the struggle to end the death penalty.

Displays and tables on the West Mall Wed. the 27 in the afternoon, and at Wheatsville Co-Op on Friday early evening.
Mike

Merci !
Hi,
Thanks for the add,
I share your fight against death penalty...
I am a French politician who lives with HIV/AIDS.
I was the first French politician – and also the only one so far – to acknowledge publicly my seropositivity, which was discovered in 1987.
In France, I am the chairman of a society with 13.000 French politicians of all parties (ELCS, soon on myspace). I support UNITAID.
One of our fight is to obtain that USA change their acts/laws which forbid people living with HIV/AIDS to enter in your country.
I know all you do against AIDS and we need you for this important fight against discriminations.
I have just created my "myspace" to promote this international fight and
I need you to mobilise in USA!
Best wishes.

Kenneth Foster is Rob's friend and a comrade in the DRIVE Movement. Kenneth is an innocent man on Texas death row, convicted by the absurd "Law of Parties"--although Kenneth didn't murder anyone, he received a death sentence because he drove the getaway car.

Kenneth was convicted because he was young, black, and a member of the San Antonio rap scene.

Kenneth's final appeal was denied and he is eligible or an execution date at any time. Across the US, the death penalty is being called into question. There are moratoriums in California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, and other states. Two weeks ago, the US Supreme Court overturned the death sentences of three Texas men. Two hundred people have been exonerated by DNA evidence and the Dallas Morning News has come out against capital punishment. Let's tell Texas Governor Rick Perry that he can't get away with murdering another innocent man!

Download and mail this sample letter from the DRIVE website or write your own. Every letter sent could help save Kenneth's life.

For more information on Kenneth Foster, visit DRIVE Movement.org or Free Kenneth.com

Witness to an Execution:
A national speaking tour of the CEDP
Campaign to END the Death Penalty

Wednesday April 11 at 7:30PM
Austin, Texas
On UT Campus, NOA RM. 1.126

Featuring:
Reverend Caroll Pickett – former prison chaplain who ministered to
over a hundred men executed in Texas, and author of the book "Within
These Walls".
Jewel Nelms – Mother of Frances Newton, the first black woman to be
executed in Texas since the civil war. At the time she was executed
in 2005, there were serious questions of innocence in her case.
Lily Mae Hughes – Member of the Campaign to End the Death Penalty, who
witnessed the execution of her close friend Justin Fuller this last year.

For most people, what happens in the execution chamber is an unknown.
But for many who have witnessed or participated in an execution, it is
a inhumane and unforgivable act that they can never forget. Come hear
their stories at this panel event.

Sponsored by the Campaign to End the Death Penalty. For more information
call 494-0667 or email at cedpaustin@gmail.com.

The North Office Building A is on Wichita, between 27th and Dean Keeton.
Wichita, is just one block west of Speedway. There is street parking all
around.
